52 Weeks of Ancestors Challenge – Week 8 – Eliza Cutmore, by BHC Ancestor Diane Madden

Eliza was born 18 Apr 1897 at 15 Folly Lane, Hunslet, Leeds, Yorkshire, England

Eliza’s father died in 1898 after falling from a chimney during construction work.

I’m not certain when Eliza went into care, as she was with her family in the 1901 England Census, but she ended up in Canada in 1911, coming to Hazelbrae in Peterborough from Barkingside, England where she was in care of Barnardo’s.

From Hazelbrae, Eliza ended up in St. Mary’s / Birr. This is where she met and married her first husband, Oscar Langford. He died in 1925, leaving her with 4 children, one of which was Verdun, our grandmother.

Granny Mathews (Verdun) knew nothing of her mother and only said she was from England. Doing the family genealogy, I found out Eliza was a BHC and doing more research, I found her gravesite, though there is no gravestone.

Eliza’s marriage record to Oscar lists her brother George as her next of kin because her father Edward was already deceased.

Eliza died about July 1948 in Hamilton, Ontario.

I had found a relative in England, who corresponded with me once, by has not replied since, although I’ve tried. If you connect to Eliza or have any information on her, I would love to connect with you.
