Charlotte Alexander and Mrs. Blaikie and The Emigration Home

Charlotte A. Alexander only brought girls to Canada for ten years between 1885 and 1896 from her Girl’s Training Home at the Red Cottage, Great Warley, Brentwood, England, she had a list of the girls she placed and corresponded with them.

Some of her girls were placed through Marchmont Distribution Home in Belleville, Ontario and others went through her residence at Cottingham Street in Toronto. One party was sent to New York.

The girls she brought to Canada were encouraged to write to her and some of these letters are available at the National Archives of Canada.

Mrs. Blaikie and The Emigration Home

The Emigration Home was opened in 1872 at 9 Lauriston Lane in Edinburgh, Scotland as a Girl’s Home. Girls were sent that same year with Annie MacPherson to the Marchmont Distribution Home in Belleville. When Annie MacPherson turned the running of that Home to Ellen Bilbrough in 1877, girls continued to be sent there by Mrs. Blaikie.
